2018 was so much excitement for a lot of artistes, some bounced back, while some had their major breakthroughs. Although, some artistes wouldn’t have done so well in the previous year if not for their record label. This shows how important a record label can be to the career of a musical artiste.

There are numerous record labels in Nigeria presently due to the flux of good artistes that are emanating every freaking day. Many young act would love if they were being signed into labels like Starboy Entertainment, Mavin Record, DMW, YBNL, Chocolate City and a host of other good music labels.

Why is this so? Simple! Because of what/who the label entail, from the producers, to the managers, to the beat maker, and finally to the artiste. This is the more reason a lot of young acts would like to be signed into the above mentioned record labels.

Now, we are going to talk about the record labels that had the hottest crew in 2018.

1. YBNL (Yahoo Boy No Laptop)

The Olamide’ owned record label has been able to do well for itself. It has been consistent in terms of the regular hit making and album release of which 2018 was no exception. 2018 was also the year YBNL had the highest number of signed artistes into the platform. The likes of Picazo, Yomi Blaze and Fire Boy, were all signed.

YBNL really did well in 2018, as Olamide had to put together all his team members to release the much anticipated YBNL mafia album which was fairly accepted by music lovers.

Artistes singed into YBNL record label include: Fire Boy, Yomi Blaze, Picazo, Limerick, Lyta, Davolee, Tee Smart, Temmie Ovwasa (the only female), DJ Enimoney and the boss himself, Olamide

2. MAVIN Record (Supreme Mavin Dynasty)

How can we talk about good record labels in Nigeria and leave out MAVIN Record.

The Don Jazzy’ owned record label has the likes of Dr SID, Tiwa Savage, Korede Bello, D’Prince, Reekado Banks (just left the label), Johnny Drille, Poe, DNA Twins, Mhizta and DJ Big N.

It is no hidden fact that most of the Mavin’s act didn’t release much songs last year but those who did, did well. We had a feel from the likes of Reekado Banks, DJ Big N and Tiwa Savage.

3. Star Boy Entertainment

Yes! You heard that right. Star Boy Entertainment is owned by Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, well known as Wizkid. 2018 was a major breakthrough for star boy entertainment, it was the year Wizkid won SoundCity’s Best Collaboration Of The Year Award.

2018 was also the year Wizkid’s Fever video had over 34 millions views on YouTube and other video streaming platforms. The video had the sensational Mavin Queen, Tiwa Savage, as the lead video vixen.

Another notable act in the Star Boy Entertainment  label was Terri. The singer who grew to become notable in the music industry following the excellent verse he delivered on the trending song titled ‘Soco’

4. DMW (Davido Music World)

Ehn! Ehn!! Ehn!!!. I know music lovers would have killed me if I had not included DMW on the list. Though, it made the list ’cause of the creative they released in 2018. From what artistes like Davido, DJ Ecool, Peruzzi, and others, released in 2018, the label sure had a great year.

2018 was the year Peruzzi released his EP (Extended Play), the EP was great and widely accepted by music lovers & critics. The EP had other fantastic acts like Burna Boy, Popcaan, Mayorkun and even the popular instagram comedian, Broda Shaggi, featured.

Other artistes signed to DMW include Mayorkun, Idowest, Sinzu, Yonda, Dremo – at some point DMW had Dammy Krane, Lola Rae, and Ichaba affiliated to the label.

Singer Mayorkun released his album titled – The Mayor Of Lagos. The album debuts on BillBoard charts by claiming the number 15th spot on the BillBoard World album chart for that week.

TMOL album had just 15 tracks which featured acts like D’banj, Patoranking, Davido, and Ghanaian’s famous rapper Sarkodie. 2018 was successful for DMW because of the work the whole team had to put in place.
